Types of Tire Repairs Car Owners Should Know About

Owning a vehicle comes with many challenges, and investing in timely and appropriate repairs will be necessary every once in a while. When it comes to tire repair work, there are a few options that a skilled mechanic will be able to provide. Depending on the type of damage, these are the most likely repair procedures:

Tire Patching

A tire patch is a square rubber with an adhesive side that is glued to the interior of the tire. As the car is driven, the tires heat up, and this heat vulcanizes the patch, making a hardened seal. Patching is a more time-consuming process than plugging because the tire must be removed from the car. It’s a good way to restore tires with a somewhat larger hole or tear.

Tire Plugging

The easiest and fastest form of tire repair is plugging. It’s commonly used for flat tire issues. A small piece of leather is thoroughly coated with rubber adhesive and stuffed into the hole on the tire. While driving, the rubber adhesive vulcanizes and creates a permanent seal. This repair can be done without removing the tire but is only viable for very small holes.

A Combination

A patch and plug combination is the most comprehensive type of repair that also guarantees more durable results. It’s also the most time-consuming method and the tire has to be removed from the vehicle. What’s used is a rubber patch with a hanging tail. The patch is placed inside the tire and the tail is pulled through the hole to plug the gap.

Replacements

In the end, if the tire is too severely damaged and neither plugging, patching, nor a combination of the two methods can provide a lasting solution, it’s best to have the tire replaced.
